Computer Assisted Robotic Surgery

What is a Computer Assisted Robotic Surgery?

Computer Assisted Robotic Surgeries enable the doctor to execute many types of surgery with more precision and control than is possible with standard surgical procedures. This method is more often used in minimally invasive surgeries, however, it is sometimes utilized in conventional surgery.

Robotic Arm surgery does not indicate that the surgery is performed by a robot. Rather, it is performed by an orthopedic surgeon who uses computer and software technology to pre-plan the surgery, then guides the robotic arm through the steps required to complete the procedure. The robotic system consists of a camera arm and also includes mechanical arms, affixed with surgical instruments. The surgeon controls the arms from a nearby computer console, affording the doctor a high definition, magnified, 3-D view of the surgical site and precise control of the surgical instruments.

What are the benefits of Robotic Surgery?

Orthopedic Surgeons have found that robotic surgery improves their visibility of the surgical site and enables them to perform delicate, complicated procedures that would otherwise be extremely difficult, even impossible, if using traditional surgical techniques.

In many cases, robotic surgery is what makes minimally invasive surgery an option; without it, open surgery would be required for the surgeon to gain access to the surgical site.

The benefits of minimally invasive surgery are tremendous:

  • Less chance of complications or infection
  • Reduced pain and blood loss
  • Faster recovery
  • Smaller incisions, so there is less scarring
